Prof. Thomas De Luca visited Lazarski University on May 26th and gave a stimulating lecture on “The Upcoming US Elections and America’s China Policy.” The audience was engaged in a clear and delightful presentation by Prof. De Luca who explained the important role the “issue of China” plays in the upcoming 2024 American presidential elections.&nbsp; Prof. De Luca showed how China is perceived by the American people - in the past and now.&nbsp; He cautioned against the current matching&nbsp;approach towards China by both the Democratic and Republican parties: “to take a strong position against China.” Prof. De Luca noted that the unfolding presidential campaigns will reveal how strong a stance each party will take on China.<br />The captivating lecture was followed by equally provocative questions from Lazarski University students in the audience.
Students from the&nbsp;<link 209 _blank>Young Diplomats Research Club</link>&nbsp;had an opportunity to carry on their discussions with Prof. De Luca over lunch, as well as, members of the Lazarski University faculty.&nbsp;
Prof. De Luca came to Lazarski University from&nbsp;<link https://www.luiss.edu/ _blank>LUISS,</link>&nbsp;a private university in Rome where he is completing his Fulbright US Research Lectureship in “Mutual Understanding Through the Study of Democracy” (January-May 2023).&nbsp; His home university is&nbsp;<link http://www.fordham.edu/ _blank>Fordham University</link>&nbsp;in New York where he is Professor of Political Science and Director of the International Studies Program and the Sino-American Seminar on Politics and Law.<br />Prof. De Luca’s visit to Lazarski University was made possible thanks to the&nbsp;<link https://fulbright.edu.pl/inter-country/ _blank>Fulbright Inter-Country Travel Grant</link>&nbsp;program which is managed at Lazarski University by the Structural Projects Department.
The Fulbright Inter-Country Travel Grant supports higher education institutions, student organizations, and non-profits in inviting American Fulbright scholars placed in a European country to give a guest lecture, meet with students, and faculty or actively participate in a conference. The grant covers the American Fulbright Scholar’s travel expenses in Europe. The host institution is expected to cover other resulting expenses like meals and accommodation.
During his visit to Lazarski University, Prof. De Luca also toured the campus. He learned about the turbulent and heroic history of Lazarski University’s founder, Mr. Ryszard Łazarski, Ph.D., who fought in the Warsaw Uprising. Having survived WWII in the German prisoner-of-war camp Stalag X-B, later repression by the communists in Poland, Mr. Łazarski gave his motherland the most powerful weapon of all – education (Nelson Mandela) - by establishing a private university which was named after him in 2000.
