Blockchain Technology Center

The first research and education unit on blockchain technology in Central and Eastern Europe and the third in Europe. It was founded on the initiative of Associate Professor Krzysztof Piech, PhD, in December 2016. The Center's mission is to provide the emerging market with proven knowledge of blockchain technology.

The Center is a member of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (since July 2017) and collaborates with the Blockchain Technology Center at University College London - the 8th university in the world according to the 2022 QS World University Rankings.

In October 2023, we are opening a new course of study at our university - Financial Technologies, with a special emphasis on blockchain technology education.

Themes of activity

Themes undertaken by the Center - in line with previous work in this area in the world and in Poland - are interdisciplinary and transcend the traditional boundaries of scientific disciplines. The Center is active in four groups of topics.

  • barriers to blockchain technology applications and ways to eliminate them,

  • changes in doing business and managing companies introduced by blockchain,
  • tokenization, tokenomics,
  • development of the cryptocurrency market in Poland,
  • cryptocurrencies vs. traditional financial markets,
  • innovation policy in blockchain technology,
  • strategies for investing in cryptocurrency markets.

Education

The Center conducts the first classes in Poland on blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. The classes are conducted at the Faculty of Economics and Management. They cover the basics of the technology, cryptocurrencies, blockchain applications in businesses, cryptocurrency startups.

The center has collaborated with the Polish Blockchain Technology Accelerator by conducting some of the first courses in Poland on smart contracts, among other topics, at Lazarski University.

Director of the Center

Dr. Krzysztof Piech - Professor at Lazarski University.

Business leader of the Stream "Blockchain / DLT and Digital Currencies" in 2016-18, i.e., a group of experts advising the Polish government (Ministry of Digitization) on blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies as part of the "From Paper to Digital Poland" program, part of the "Strategy for Responsible Development." This is the second such group of advisors in the world and at the same time the largest so far (more than 100 people from administration, academia, business took part in the work).

Coordinator of the Poland Blockchain Technology Accelerator, arbitration judge of the Blockchain and New Technologies Chamber of Commerce, board member of the Poland Bitcoin Association. Member of the board of directors of the International Decentralized Association of Cryptocurrency and Blockchain (Moscow), research fellow at University College London Centre for Blockchain Technologies, external associate at Iran Blockchain Labs at Sharif University of Technology.
