"Is China's growing economic and political power a threat or an opportunity?”
Should we resist China’s political ambitions and curb its plans for economic expansion, or join its triumphant march…? Chinese companies and financial institutions are increasingly occupying a place on world markets traditionally reserved for American and Western European corporations. America and the European Union must therefore work out their policy towards China’s expansionist policies. Should we follow America’s example and raise tariffs by 20%, 40% or even 100% on goods from China, or should we open our market to raw materials, capital, companies and technologies “Made in China”? As part of the European Union undergoing an ecological transformation, should we do business with a country that leads the way in the production of “green” energy sources (photovoltaics, electric cars, heat pumps, etc.)? Since everything is manufactured (cheaply!) in China… perhaps we should seize this opportunity?
Should we open up the market to construction companies, heavy industry and the financial services sector? They undoubtedly have the necessary know-how and the financial resources to operate effectively in the market. Such companies can provide jobs and career opportunities. Or should China’s incompatibility with Europe in the social and political spheres (quasi-totalitarianism, social injustices, imperial ambitions and political ideology) be a reason for caution and a more reserved stance…?
As usual, elected representatives representing the FOR and AGAINST positions will present their views. As usual, a large audience will listen to the arguments and vote at the end of the debate. Perhaps some of the audience at the debate have already formed their own opinions, but perhaps we can persuade them to change?
Join us for the debate on December 15 at 8:00 AM, room 58!
